One Standard, Whatever the Clock Says

Birchis is a garage door repair outfit based on Bolsa Chica St in Huntington Beach, working across the city and out into Fountain Valley, Westminster, Seal Beach and Costa Mesa. A good part of what we do happens outside normal hours, because springs and cables do not check the time before they let go.

We built the business around a complaint we kept hearing from people who had been rescued by somebody else. The door worked again, so on the face of it the job was done. Then a spring rated for a much lighter door failed inside a year. Or the opener had been fighting a badly balanced door ever since and burned out its gear. Or nobody could say what part had gone on, because the invoice said “spring” and nothing else. Every one of those jobs was done after dark, to a customer who was tired and in no position to ask questions.

That is the gap we work in. An after hours callout is not a different trade with looser rules, it is the same trade at an inconvenient hour. So the late job gets the same sequence as the morning one: the door is measured and weighed rather than guessed at, the correct spring goes on or none does, the door is lifted by hand and held at waist height before the opener is reconnected, and the wire size, inside diameter and length get written down where you can find them in five years.

What That Means in Practice

• No after hours exclusion. The workmanship guarantee reads the same for a job finished at eleven at night as for one finished at eleven in the morning. There is no clause about unsociable hours, because there is no reason for one.
• The correct part, or an honest return trip. If the right spring is not on the van, we make the door safe, get your car out if that is what you need, and come back with the part that belongs. The return visit is charged at the day rate.
• No selling doors at midnight. Replacement is a decision that deserves daylight, measurements and a night’s thought. If we think the door is genuinely past repair, we will say so and then leave you alone to consider it.
• Salt air taken seriously. This close to the water, cables corrode from inside the strand and hardware pits years earlier than the manuals assume. We look at that on every visit, whether or not it is what you called about.
• Licensed and insured, and local. We know which streets flood, which tracts have the same builder grade doors, and how far the marine layer really reaches inland.
